Tour De White Rock - White Rock Muffler Hill Climb
by Eric Dwyer

A former Edmonton Eskimo cheerleader was too worn out to raise her arms or voice in a cheer of celebration after her first victory in only her 2nd year as a bike racer. Maria Lee, 27, now living in Vancouver and racing for the BC Provincial team ignored the heat and pain of climbing 700 meters straight uphill on a sweltering, 30 degree night to win the Tour de White Rock - White Rock Muffler Hill climb in 2 minutes, 10.10 seconds. "You start hurting about halfway up the hill, it goes away and the pain hits you again near the summit. I planned to sprint to the finish line but your brain goes dead with all the pain and fatigue. I had no idea how I'd done." She finished nearly 6 seconds ahead of Helen Kelly of Australia. 43 year old Sara Neil, the Tour De Delta Hill Climb winner last Friday night, took 3rd place.

Lee is a self confessed former couch potato who got hooked on cycling watching Lance Armstrong win the Tour de France two years ago. Inspired by Armstrong and encouraged and coached by her boyfriend Bill Holden, Lee started training and finished 2nd in her first BC Superweek race last year, the Delta hill climb. This year she had top 5 finishes in the Delta criterium and road race and would be thrilled with another top 5 in the criterium and hill climb in White Rock Saturday and Sunday. An Eskimo cheerleader as a high schooler, Lee is now cheering loudly for BC Superweek. "What a great event and what a great sport," she says. "It's so great to be able to compete against many of the top riders in North America. My legs are dead. I'm exhausted but I'm so happy with this win you wouldn't believe it!"

Cam Evans, 2nd in the Tour de Delta White Spot road race in his hometown of Tsawwassen last Sunday, won the men's hill climb in a blistering 1.41.34. He was 2 seconds faster than Jeff Sherstobitoff of Kelowna and 3 seconds ahead of his Symmetrics teammate, Andrew Pinfold who took 3rd. "Iwanted it (the win) more in Delta but a wins a win so it's important, especially here. All our sponsors for Symmetrics are local so this weekend is really big for us. Our plan was to have myself, Adnrew and Will (Routley who finished 4th) go all out and have the rest of the team save themselves for the crit and road race."

The Criterium begins at 3 pm Saturday and the Road Race starts at 8 am Sunday.
