An early nine rider break, containing Bo Hamburger (Casino) and Stuart O‚Grady (Gan) reached a maximum gap of seven and a half minutes before the Telekom team of race leader Erik Zabel went to the front of the peleton to reel them in. However, the breakaway manged to stay clear, with Jens Heppner (Telekom) taking the stage, and Hamburger the yellow jersey. O‚Grady is no second in the general classification. O‚Grady actually started the day in front of Hamburger, but Intermediate Sprint time bonuses gave Hamburger enough time to take the leader‚s jersey.
