In its quest for World Cup, World Championship and Olympic medals, the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) has been using the CompuTrainer indoor bicycle training/simulation technology since 1996. All the Canadian national team cycling coaches and athletes use CompuTrainer equipment for testing and training, and when CCA recently received a federal government equipment grant, the decision was made to purchase of up to 30 additional Model Pro3D (Lab Version) CompuTrainers for use by national Development Team cyclists. This is the largest single order taken by RacerMate, Inc., manufacturer of the CompuTrainer and founder of the Electronic Bicycle Racing Association (EBRA).

Kris Westwood, Coach of the National Teams Development Program, ensures that cyclists throughout Canada are given as much access as possible to facilities, coaching, expertise and other athletes they can train alongside. What better way to assist in the overall development of a group of cyclists than CompuTrainer? "There is no other indoor trainer that has the full range of features of CompuTrainer," Westwood explains. "I am talking about the quality of calibration, the capability to pre-set a wattage load, the highly consistent results: It is lab quality equipment."

Westwood sees multiple training benefits of this product, and says this purchase will further aid in CCA's long-term mission of strengthening cycling talent in Canada. Their aim is ultimately to win Olympic medals, but short-term objectives include athlete development, a battery of testing, and athlete retention. "CompuTrainer makes it much easier for athletes to stay at home in winter and train. The alternative would be to travel to a warm climate," Westwood says. "Some of our athletes use CompuTrainer in the summer months, too, for high-intensity training sessions, rather than go outside. That way they can closely control the atmospheric variables of wind and temperature and get a result they can more accurately compare with the previous session.

"Our testing protocols are now built around CompuTrainer," he concludes. "That is how much confidence we have in the quality of this product."
