The Canadian Cycling Association is pleased to announce that the winner of the criterium event at the National Road Championships in Kamloops, BC, on July 9 will be awarded a jersey to go along with the title. The criterium is an event that showcases cycling before thousands of spectators in major urban centres, and it is the CCA's opinion that recognizing a criterium champion in this way will help promote our sport in the eyes of the general public.
However, the UCI does not recognize the criterium as a discipline distinct from the road race, so it is likely that the criterium champion will from time to time compete in the same events as the road champion. To avoid confusion, the CCA will therefore award the criterium champion a jersey of a design distinct from that of the national road champion. The criterium champion jersey is pictured below. To avoid conflict with UCI rules, the criterium champion will only have the right to wear this jersey in criteriums in Canada (as defined by the CCA below) that are sanctioned at the national level or below. That means the champion will not have the right to wear the jersey in any other type of cycling event, in UCI-sanctioned events or in events held outside Canada.
CCA definition of a criterium:
- Closed circuit between 800 and 3,000 metres;
- Classification decided either by order of finish or by points accumulated in intermediate sprints;
- Free lap for mechanical mishap or crash.
2005 Champion Critérium
L'Association cycliste canadienne est heureuse d'annoncer que le vainqueur du critérium au championnat canadien sur route à Kamloops, C.-B., le 9 juillet, recevra un maillot pour reconnaître son titre. L'ACC considère que le critérium est un outil très important pour promouvoir le sport cycliste dans les centres urbain devant des milliers de spectateurs, et qu'il est logique de reconnaître le champion avec un maillot.
En même temps, il faut comprendre que l'UCI ne reconnais pas le critérium comme discipline distincte de la course sur route, et il est fort probable que le champion critérium participera aux mêmes épreuves que le champion sur route. Pour éviter la confusion, l'ACC a dessiné un maillot différent pour le champion critérium (voir illustration). Pour éviter un conflit avec le règlement de l'UCI, le champion critérium aura le droit de porter son maillot uniquement dans des critériums au Canada (comme défini par l'ACC) de niveau national ou plus bas. C'est à dire que le champion n'aura pas le droit de porter le maillot à d'autres types d'épreuve, aux épreuves UCI, ou aux épreuves hors Canada.
Définition ACC d'un critérium:
- Circuit fermé mesurant entre 800 et 3,000 mètres;
- Classement soit par l'ordre à l'arrivée ou par l'addition des points accumulés lors des sprints intermédiaires;
- Tour gratuite pour bris mécanique ou chute.
