In excess of 80 riders contested the 2005 Alberta Provincial Cyclo-cross Championships, held Sunday on a fast, dry course in Red Deer. Newly-crowned Provincial Champions include Tim Heemskerk (United Cycle) and Mical Dyck (Terrascape) in the Elite Men and Elite Women categories respectively. Heemskerk, who has dominated the Alberta 'cross season, is not eligible to compete at the Canadian National Championships next weekend in Ontario as he is a Dutch citizen. Congratulations also to the Juventus club, winners of 5 of 6 medals in the U17 and Junior categories, and their champions Samantha Grover (U17 Women), David Larson (U17 Men), and '04 National medalist Mike Bidniak (Junior Men). Thanks to Bob McKerrell and the Central Alberta Bicycle Club for a great course and a fine race.

Lyne Keeps Rolling, Tim Wins in Gloucester Courtesy Millman Media
October 31, 2005
The weekend was circled in red pen from the day they started their comeback season, but Saturday's third stop on the Crank Brothers U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross in Gloucester, Mass. still managed to exceed Tim Johnson and Lyne Bessette's wildest expectations. The Cyclocrossworld.com-Louis Garneau duo chalked up a pair of wins in a freak snowstorm that coated the Stage Fort Park course in a wet blanket of snow. Twenty-four hours later, Sunday's race went off under warm and sunny conditions and Lyne tallied win number eight on the season while Tim finished fifth.
In his triumphant return to what he considers his home course, Tim rocketed off the front of the 100-rider Elite Men's field on the very first lap. As his main rivals struggled in the snowy and muddy conditions, Tim sailed away for one of the most fulfilling wins of his career. The win catapulted Tim into the U.S. Gran Prix leader's jersey, though he ceded the jersey back to Ryan Trebon (Kona) on Sunday after finishing fifth behind Trebon's win.
"I was not expecting this at all," said Tim after toweling off and warming his frozen body on Saturday. "Even if I ended my season today I'd consider it a success. To come back and win this race, in front of my family and friends, it was more than I had hoped for. My Louis Garneau SteepleX bikes were perfect and Stu Thorne did an incredible job keeping me going with new bikes in the pits."
Proving herself equally comfortable in the snow as on the fast dirt, Lyne ran away with both days' races. The only hiccup in her march towards an undefeated North American season came on the first lap of Saturday's race. Lyne hit the ground hard on the first off camber corner of the muddy, snowy course, but popped back up, went straight to the front of the Elite Women's field, and was off the front by the end of lap one. Even with freezing fingers and the accumulating snow Lyne stretched her lead to almost two minutes by the finish.
"Even with the bad conditions, I felt really good," said Lyne. "The mountain bike racing I did this year really made it possible for me to handle these conditions. I know I have the power from my road racing to go fast on fast courses, but now I know I can go fast in bad conditions too. To win and then have Tim win, it was a great day for us."
Tim and Lyne continue their 2005 season November 5-6 in New Jersey.
