After a morning of steady rain there is a bit of blue sky peeking through as the men lined up to take the start.
The men will do 6 laps
Lap1 Up the climb it is Todd Wells (GT Bicycles) at the front followed by Martin Gujan (Athleticum-MTB-Team), Cedric Ravanel (Team Lapierre International), Julien Absalon (Orbea) and Geoff Kabush. Seamus McGrath (Canadian National Team) is sitting about 9th
End of lap 1: Lukas Flückiger (Athleticum-MTB-Team) in the lead (lap time 21:42). Julien Absalon (Orbea) in 2nd at 3 sec. José Hermida (Multivan Merida Biking Team) 3rd at 9 sec. Todd Wells 4th, Burry Stander (GT Bicycles) 5th, Jaroslav Kulhavy 6th, Seamus McGrath 7th, Adam Craig (Giant Mountain Bike Team) 8th at 44 sec back, Jeremy Horgan-Kobelski (Subaru-Gary Fisher) 9th at 45 sec, Martin Gujan (Athleticum-MTB-Team) 10th at 48 sec and Geoff Kabush 11th 52 seconds back.
The rain has returned and is off and on again drizzle.

Lap 2 At the top of the climb, Absalon has taken over the lead. Hermida and Lukas Flückiger are together at 20 seconds back. At 35 seconds is Burry. McGrath sitting 10th at 55 seconds, Kabush 12th at 1:10

Lap 3 At the top of the climb - Absalon still leading Hermida and Fluckiger. Stander 4th but Craig is moving up on him. McGrath just 20 seconds behind Craig. Kabush is moving up and closing on Wells and Gujan.
At the end of Lap 3 - Absalon , Flückiger at 1:07, Hermida at 1:46, Craig 4th at 2:06, Stander 5th at 2:54, Horgan-Kobelski 6th at 3:21, Kabush 7th at 3:36, Gujan 8th at 4 min, McGrath 9th at 4:09 and Metzler 10th at 4:35

Max Plaxton is out of the race after a mechanical on the first lap
Lap 4 In the technical section after the descent - Absalon, Fluckiger at 1:10, Hermida and Craig are together at 2:40. Hermida is struggling in the mud and is off and running, while Craig (from muddy Maine) is riding it. Geoff Kabush (also riding the technical muddy sections) now 5th at 3:50. Burry Stander 6th, Horgan-Kobelski 7th, Cédric Ravanel has moved up to 8th and McGrath is 9th

Lap 5 As they complete the 5th lap and head out for the final lap, the rain has stopped and the temperature is now dropping. Riders are crossing the line absolutely covered in mud. it is impossible to read numbers and the colours of their uniforms are all starting the look the same... mud brown! This is a day of survivors, Many many riders are dropping out or being pulled from the course before they are lapped.
Absalon still in the lead with a gap of 2:12 over Fluckiger. Craig in 3rd at 3:55 back and Kabush now 4th at 4:33.. just 38 seconds behind Craig. Hermida 5th but fading.. he is 5:45 behind Absalon
