March 15/13 11:59 am - Exergy Women's Tour to be Cancelled Posted by Editoress on 03/15/13
The financial difficulties facing the Exergy Development Group continue to have an impact on North American cycling, with the Exergy Tour about to announce formally that they will be cancelling the multi-day stage race (scheduled for early June) for 2013. The Idaho race was one of the top women's races on the North American calendar, and will leave a huge hole in UCI racing in North America - the Canadian GP Gatineau time trial and road race are now the only women's races on the UCI calendar for North America.
Exergy, after making a dramatic entry into U.S. cycling a few years ago, began experiencing financial difficulties with the renewable energy projects they build when the economy hit a downturn. They first dropped their pro men's team, then couldn't meet obligations for sponsorship of the US GP of Cyclo-cross series, and ultimately pulled out of the Cyclo-cross Worlds in Louisville, Kentucky, earlier this year. They have unpaid obligations in the cycling community totalling millions of dollars. Now, the only cycling sponsorship they still have is with the women's team, Exergy Twenty16.
