2nd Annual Big-O - Women's Mountain Bike Charity Event

On October 13, 2007, the 2nd Annual Big-O - Women's Mountain Bike Charity Event will be underway at the Ganaraska Forest east of Highway 115 in Port Hope Township. Each year after Thanksgiving, women of all ages grab their bikes, and head into the forest to raise money and awareness for Ovarian Cancer Canada.

"Our participants are women of all ages and skill levels, from the novice cyclist to the mountain biking enthusiast," says Jen Haslett, Event Coordinator, "It's a great non-competitive atmosphere, where women get together to enjoy the fall colours and grind up some dirt!"

2,300 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed annually in Canada. Because symptoms are non-specific, ovarian cancer is usually detected in its later stages, making it the leading cause of death due to gynecological malignancy. Yet a recently conducted Decima Research study indicates that most women cannot identify the subtle signs and symptoms of the disease. "It is our goal to change this" says Haslett.

Ovarian Cancer Canada provides leadership by supporting women living with the disease and their families, building greater awareness, and funding research into reliable early detection techniques, improved treatments, and ultimately, a cure.

The Ganaraska Forest is within an hour's drive from Toronto, Peterborough, Lindsay, Cobourg, and surrounding areas. Registration fees are $25 per rider, which includes a tote bag and lunch. Those that pre-register before October 1st also receive a free T-shirt and water bottle. For more information, go to www.thebig-o.ca, or e-mail
