Pound Nominated for CAS Presidency

Canadian Dick Pound, the outspoken former President of WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency), has been nominated by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for the position of President of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). The CAS is the agency which oversees arbitration cases by athletes.

The presidency of the CAS has been vacant for over a year since the death of Keba Mbaye (Senegal), who was the founding President of the organization. The CAS, as well as acting as the final court of appeal for athletes in arbitration disputes over suspensions for the use of performance enhancing drugs, controls the appointment of arbitrators who rule on disputes.

As well as Pound, Geneva-based lawyer Robert Briner is said to be in the running for the position, however, the CAS has not set a date for elections. If Pound were elected to the position, he could potentially oversee the appeal by Floyd Landis - the U.S. rider stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title - somewhat ironic given Pound's ongoing war of words with cycling regarding doping in the sport...
