Colombian Janier Acevedo, of team Greatwall-Indeportes Antioquia, is one step closer to the title of this year’s La Vuelta Ciclista Internacional a Costa Rica after winning Saturday’s tenth stage, which completed a high mountain course of 127.5 kilometres between the capital San José and San Isidro of Pérez Zeledón, in the country’s South region.

Acevedo hit his main rivals on the day’s first climb up to the feared “Cerro de la Muerte”, the highest point of the Costa Rican tour at 3300 meters above sea level. The Colombian climber took the stage on a time of 3:27:41, while locals José Adrán Bonilla of Citibank-Economy Rent a Car-Blue, Juan Carlos Rojas of PlycemJPS-Orbea, and Gregory Brenes of team BCR-Pizza Hut-KHS finished at 2:50.

This result allows Acevedo to feel more comfortable in the general classification, with a 4:09 advantage over Brenes, who will have try to cut off some of the difference on tomorrow’s 30 kilometre Individual Time Trial between San Pedro and San Isidro of Pérez Zeledón.

Costa Rica's major road race will finish on Monday, when the peloton faces the “queen stage” between Pérez Zeledón to San José.
