August 9/13 10:08 am - Federal Government Renews Funding for Velirium

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Infrastructure, Communities and Intergovernmental Affairs and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, announced on August 7th that the Corporation de la Coupe du monde de vélo de montagne Mont-Sainte-Anne has been granted financial assistance for the promotion and commercialization outside Quebec of Vélirium, the international festival featuring one of the legs of the International Cycling Union's Mountain Bike World Cup.

This assistance, granted in the form of a $150,000 non-repayable contribution over two years, has been awarded through Canada Economic Development's Quebec Economic Development Program.

"By renewing its funding of Vélirium, the Government of Canada is contributing to the economic development of the Québec region and to the growth of its tourism industry," said Minister Lebel.

Mont-Sainte-Anne has been hosting mountain bike World Cup events since 1991. Known under the name of Vélirium since 2003, this world-class cycling race has become a flagship event for Côte-de-Beaupré, with several of the festival's popular events and activities taking place in the heart of Québec City.

The financial assistance from Canada Economic Development will serve to support the commercialization of the 2013 and 2014 editions of this major sporting event outside Quebec. Among the activities planned is the creation and broadcast of a television production promoting the recreational tourism site of Mont-Sainte-Anne and showcasing key regional attractions. The target markets will include Canada, the United States and such European countries as France, Italy and the United Kingdom.
