The big attacks started happening on this lap and the front group is down to 51 riders as the riders start their second last lap (less than 30 kilometre left). The break was absorbed and in the front group are, among others, Axel Merckx (Bel), Micael Boogerd (Ned), Laurent Brochard (Fra), Andrei Tchmil (Bel), Bo Hamburger (Den), Oscar Freire (Esp), Chann McRae (USA), Michele Bartoli (Ita) Richard Virenque (Fra), Francesco Casagrande (Ita) and Oscar Camenzind (Sui). Dominique Perras did not make the cut, neither did Laurent Jalabert (Fra). Dominique is in a group 2:36 down on the leaders, Michael Barry in the next group back at 5:57.
