May 1/01 2:01 am - Quebec Kids Race Series, Erker Wins, New Riding Club in Ontario

Posted by Editoress on 05/1/01

Coupe du Mome Volkswagen les Ailes

A new race series for kids in Quebec. This 8 race series will be held on the track and field 400 metre track in St-Bruno (Clairevue Street/ Goyer, close to the arena).

The event will be open to riders of the following categories:
bibittes (under 9 years).
pee wee and minimes, boys and girls.

First race is Saturday May 5th
Organizer is the VOLKSWAGEN LES AILES elite team.
The main goal of these events is to help the clubs to develop new riders. With a loop of 400 meters, it will be easy for the coaches to see their athlete the entire lap, also making it easier to "coach" them and observe them in a pack. Great opportunity for parents and spectators as they can observe the racing in its entirety. It's like a race on the velodrome, with safety is at its best, no cars, no holes, no pedestrians crossing the street.

Please note that for the bibittes category the road bike is not mandatory.
Any bikes will do the job.
Helmets mandatory for all categories.

Registration starts a 10am.

Race schedule is as follows. Note that before all races, they will be some "control" laps so the kids get a chance to ride in a pack.

bibittes girls: 10:40am - 3 laps
bibittes boys: 11:00 - 3 laps

pee wee girls: 11:15am - 8 laps
pee wee boys:11:30am - 8 laps

minimes girls: 12:00 am - 12 laps
minimes boys: 12:30pm - 12 laps

Erker Wins in California
Courtesy Stuart Hughes

Jacob Erker (Schroeder/Incycle) returned to the podium recently at the Devil's Punchbowl Road Race in the high desert of Pearblossom, California. Jacob won the race for the 2nd year running from a two man breakaway which left the bunch on the 4th of 5 laps. This break played out the same as last year with Erker outsprinting Chris Walker (Zombies) again to win the race. Nova Scotia native Greg Bourque (Schroeder/Incycle) followed in for 4th place just behind a Net Zero rider with the remaining field crossing the line in 1's and 2's.

Learn to Bike

Each Sunday morning (8am), I teach a "learn to bike" class.

We have ten students so far that are novice to intermediate cyclists. We teach, gearing, hills, group/pack riding, inlining and general bike maintenance. There is no cost.

Leaves from Absolute Fitness, corner of Derry Rd and Millcreek in Mississauga.

Who are the instructors.
Peter Judd:
5 time ironman Competitor, 12 years of racing tri's, marathoner and and adventure racer.

Teresa Judd:
5 time ironman finisher, 15 top 3 finishes in her age group in Tri's.
Marathoner and adventure racer.

It's fun, non-threatening. The ride lasts about 2.5 hrs. about 45-50km.

For new or beginning triathletes, it's really a must
