November 14/22 17:51 pm - Mathias Guillemette Leads Canadian Results at Champions League #1

Mathias Guillemette had one of the biggest international results of his track career on Saturday, at Round 1 of the UCI Track Champions League in Mallorca, winning the Men's Elimination race. Combined with his sixth place in the Scratch Race, Guillemette finishes Round 1 second in the overall standings, five points behind Great Britain's Mark Stewart.

"I didn't expect a victory at all today, I was going there to measure myself against the best, that was the real objective. It was only when I found myself in the top-6 that I really believed in it," Guillemette told Sportcom. "I knew I was going to have good luck if I got alone with [defending champion Gavin] Hoover at the very end; he was exhausted from the last two or three sprints. I was strategic then and as soon as I started my sprint, I knew it was really in my pocket. I'm really happy, it's my first victory on the international scene. I want to be consistent in each of the races for the next rounds. It's important to perform well in each of the races to maintain a good place in the general classification," concluded Guillemette.

In other top Canadian results, Kelsey Mitchell was second in the Women's Keirin, after being relegated in the earlier Sprint event for dropping into the sprinter's lane too early. Sarah van Dam was fourth in the Scratch Race and fifth in the Elimination Race, while Maggie Coles-Lyster was fourth in the Elimination Race.
