Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike) won the 19th stage, a 151-kilometre leg between Feltre and Alleghe-Piani di Pezzè, after catching and overtaking Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) on the final climb. Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) retained the pink jersey before the decisive stage to Piancavallo.
The American, capped off a great day for Visma-Lease a Bike on the queen stage of the Giro d'Italia, with 4,888 metres of elevation gain and six categorized climbs: Passo Duran, Coi, Forcella Staulanza, Passo Giau, Passo Falzarego, and the final ascent to Piani di Pezzè.
Kuss won with a time of 4:28:33 seconds, ahead of Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek), by 13 seconds, and Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), third. Felix Gall (Decathlon-CMA CGM) was fourth at 39 seconds, just ahead of Jonas Vingegaard, who finished with the same time and maintained his 4:03 lead over the Austrian in the general classification.
Ciccone dominates the mountains on the Passo Giau
The stage began with numerous attacks from Feltre, on a day marked by fatigue and a succession of climbs.
After several neutralized attacks, the race was finally whittled down on the Passo Duran, the first major climb of the day. A lead group formed there, including several prominent riders such as Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek), Damiano Caruso (Bahrain-Victorious), Enric Mas (Movistar), Juan Pedro López (Movistar), Lorenzo Milesi (Movistar), Einer Rubio (Movistar), David de la Cruz (Pinarello-Q36.5), Giulio Pellizzari (Red Bull-Bora), Sepp Kuss (Visma-Lease a Bike), Michael Storer (Tudor Pro Cycling), and Derek Gee-West (Lidl-Trek).
Ciccone then began his mountain masterclass. The Italian crested the Passo Duran in the lead, ahead of Jardi Christiaan van der Lee and Einer Rubio, and again led the climbs of Coi and Forcella Staulanza. Rubio also played a key role by winning the intermediate sprint in Palafavera, ahead of Ciccone himself.
The Passo Giau, a hors catégorie climb and the day's most difficult, completely shattered the race. Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain-Victorious) struggled in the pink jersey group, Ben O'Connor (Jayco-AlUla) was dropped, and several of the riders who had been in the breakaway lost contact. Ciccone crested the summit first again, ahead of Rubio, Gee-West, and Kuss, securing crucial points for the mountains classification.
Kuss catches Ciccone on the final climb
After the Passo Giau, the leading group diminished in number. At the Red Bull Kilometre, at kilometre 118.6, Derek Gee-West gained six bonus seconds, Michael Storer added four, and Einer Rubio earned two. Shortly after, on the Passo Falzarego, the Colombian rider from Movistar crested the summit first after attacking from the leading group.
Ciccone took a risk on the descent of the Falzarego and opened up a significant advantage. With 16 kilometres to go, he had a 56-second lead over the chasing group and 2:50 over the maglia rosa group. The Italian maintained a 1:07 advantage with 6.5 kilometres to go and was the first to start the final climb to Piani di Pezzè, a 5-kilometre ascent of 9.6%.
The final climb changed the outcome.
With 4.3 kilometres to go, Giulio Pellizzari and Sepp Kuss attacked from the chasing group. The American was the strongest on the decisive ramps, catching Ciccone 2.2 kilometres from the finish, overtaking him, and riding solo to victory.
Kuss built a lead of 15 seconds over Gee-West and 20 seconds over Ciccone 1.5 kilometres from the summit. In the final kilometre, he maintained his lead and crossed the finish line alone to achieve the 12th professional victory of his career.
