Rocky Mountain Sold!
We first heard about this last week, but didn‚t want to say anything until we had a chance to check it out some more. However, bar something unexpected occurring, it looks to be true that Rocky Mountain Bicycles will be sold to Procycle. Procycle is one of Canada‚s largest domestic bicycle manufacturers, producing the Peugeot, Oryx, CCM and Mikado lines, plus a host of private label bikes for chain stores. The details are sketchy, but the most likely scenario that we can see will be for the lower end Rocky‚s currently being produced overseas to be shifted to Procycle‚s St George de Beauce (1 hour south of Quebec City) factory, while the high end handbuilts will stay in Vancouver. In Rocky Mountain, Procycle will get one of the most prestigious name brands in the world, synonymous with quality. Rocky will receive access to Procycle‚s greater buying power and all models will now be built in Canada. Comments from industry people see it as a potentially good fit, and a great feather in the cap of Procycle. The only concern that is being expressed is that Procycle needs to be careful not to dilute the reputation for quality associated with Rocky.
The Flirt In The Dirt MTB race (sponsored in part by Canadian Cyclist) will take place on Sunday, July 6 at the Range Road Diner, northwest of Meaford, Ont. (between Owen Sound and Collingwood). Registration is from 12PM until 1:30PM, and the race starts at 2PM. Entry is $10 and includes a free T-Shirt and Swag Bag for the first 100 entrants. The 1997 Nova Scotia Mountain Bike Championships will be held July 5th and 6th at Ski Martock(Windsor). This is the final selection event for the provincial team. For more info contact Mark Kazimirski at (902)798-9501 (thanks to Randy Gray for this info).
